Senate District 31: Traffic Crash Statistics

An abstract, flat graphic uses stark geometric shapes and minimal lines to represent an unspecified street incident at night. Framed by comic-style borders, its minimalist style conveys a somber, detached summary.
Oct 24, 2026 - A 70-year-old woman crossing with the signal suffered a fracture and dislocation to her arm near West 171st Street and Broadway. A driver was involved in the crash.

How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.

Recent win: State Senators Urge AG James to Issue Illegal E-Moto Warning
  • 2026-10-02 · Leadership · Streetsblog NYC · ↓ hurts grade
A push grew to let cars back into Quisqueya Plaza. Electeds and merchants pressed DOT for a redesign. Residents fought to keep the refuge. For now it’s talk, not asphalt.

NYSDOT says it finished $11.3M concrete repairs on Cross Bronx and BQE ramps. Smoother lanes can mean faster driving and more traffic. Pedestrians and cyclists get no new protection—only more risk and fumes nearby.

Nine state senators asked AG Letitia James for a consumer alert on high-speed illegal e-bikes and e-scooters sold online. The push followed a deadly May 28 Queensboro Bridge head-on crash.

DOT rolled out Summer Streets for five Saturdays across 21.8 miles. Hours shift later in the outer boroughs. But the routes stay unconnected and scarce. Car-free space stays a brief exception, not the rule.
