Who’s Injuring and Killing Pedestrians in Precinct 44?

Hit-and-Run, Run Amok: When Will New York’s Leaders Stop the Bloodshed?

Hit-and-Run, Run Amok: When Will New York’s Leaders Stop the Bloodshed?

Precinct 44: Jan 1, 2022 - Aug 8, 2025

Another Night, Another Hit-and-Run

Just last Wednesday, a 44-year-old woman tried to cross West 174th Street and Macombs Road. An SUV turned into a driveway and struck her. The driver did not stop. She died at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police are still searching for the driver. The news came cold: “A 44-year-old woman was fatally mowed down by a reckless driver… before zooming off Wednesday night, police said.” (New York Post).

This is not rare. In the last twelve months, 690 people were injured and 1 killed in crashes in Precinct 44. Four suffered serious injuries. Children are not spared: 62 kids were hurt, just in the past year. The numbers do not stop. They only rise.

Speed, Flight, and the Cost of Delay

The dead do not get justice. The drivers flee. The city waits. In June, police finally arrested a driver who killed a cabbie in 2022. She was going 77 mph in a 25 zone. She ran a red light. She left the man to die. “Williams, 26, surrendered with a lawyer at the 44th Precinct stationhouse…” (NY Daily News).

SUVs and sedans do most of the harm. In three years, cars and SUVs killed four people and injured hundreds more. Trucks, buses, motorcycles, mopeds, and bikes all add to the toll. The streets are not safe for anyone on foot or on wheels.

Leaders and Law: Who Will Act?

The police have the tools. They can enforce speed limits. They can ticket drivers who fail to yield. They can target crash hotspots. But they must choose to use them. The silence from leadership is louder than the sirens. Every day without action is another day someone does not come home.

Call to Action: Demand More Than Thoughts and Prayers

Contact your council member, your assembly member, your precinct. Demand speed enforcement. Demand real protection for people walking and biking. Demand action before another name is added to the list.
