Greenwich Village Bleeds While City Stalls—Lower the Speed, Save a Life
Greenwich Village: Jan 1, 2022 - Jun 4, 2025
Blood on the Crosswalks
A cyclist lies in the street. His sweater soaked through. “All my body was blood and the sweater,” said Myung Jin Chung. He woke up in an ambulance. The driver who hit him ran a red, reversed, nearly ran him over again, then fled. No arrest. No justice. Just another day in Greenwich Village.
In the last twelve months, 116 people have been injured and one killed in 194 crashes here. Four suffered injuries so severe they may never walk the same. The dead do not speak. The wounded do, if they can.
The Numbers Do Not Lie
Two people have died on these streets since 2022. One was 75. One was 25. Seven have been seriously injured. The toll is steady, merciless. Cars and SUVs are the main weapons—2 deaths and 2 serious injuries from cars and SUVs. Taxis, trucks, bikes, motorcycles: all part of the machinery. No one is safe. Not the old, not the young. Not the man crossing with the light. Not the cyclist just trying to get home.
A wrong-way driver fleeing police struck a cyclist on West Third. The man survived. The driver vanished. “A wrong-way driver fleeing from police struck a bicyclist in Greenwich Village during a chase,” police said. The city promises new pursuit policies. The pain remains.
Promises and Delays
The city touts Vision Zero. Lower speed limits. More cameras. But the blood keeps coming. Local leaders have the power to lower speed limits to 20 mph. They have not done it. Cameras that catch speeders are at risk of going dark unless Albany acts. Every delay is another broken bone, another funeral.
What Now?
This is not fate. This is policy. Call your council member. Call the mayor. Demand a 20 mph speed limit. Demand cameras that never sleep. Demand streets where a man on a bike can make it home. Take action now.
