About these crash totals
Counts come from NYC police crash reports (NYC Open Data). We sum all crashes, injuries, and deaths for this area across the selected time window shown on the card. Injury severity follows the official definitions in the NYPD dataset.
- Crashes: number of police‑reported collisions (all road users).
- All injuries: total injured people in those crashes.
- Moderate / Serious: subcategories reported by officers (e.g., broken bones vs. life‑threatening trauma).
- Deaths: people who died due to a crash.
Notes: Police reports can be corrected after initial publication. Minor incidents without a police report are not included.

CloseAbout these numbers
These totals count vehicles with at least the shown number of camera‑issued speeding violations (school‑zone speed cameras) in any rolling 12‑month window in this district. Totals are summed from 2022 to the present for this geography.
- ≥ 6 (6+): advocates’ standard for repeat speeding offenders who should face escalating consequences.
- ≥ 16 (16+): threshold in the current edited bill awaiting State Senate action.
About this list
This ranks vehicles by the number of NYC school‑zone speed‑camera violations they received in the last 12 months anywhere in the city. The smaller note shows how many times the same plate was caught in this area in the last 90 days.
Camera violations are issued by NYC DOT’s program. Counts reflect issued tickets and may omit dismissed or pending cases. Plate text is shown verbatim as recorded.

A bike, a sedan, and a corner in Jamaica Hills
Jamaica Hills-Briarwood: Jan 1, 2022 - Nov 11, 2025
Just after 8:30 AM on Oct 23, a driver and a person on a bike converged at Gothic Drive and 170 Street. The bicyclist was hurt; police logged a collision with a sedan and an e‑bike at that corner (NYC Open Data).
This Week
- Oct 9, about 8:45 PM: a driver in a sedan hit a person walking at 150 Street and 84 Avenue; police recorded a left turn by the driver (NYC Open Data).
- Sep 25, just after 3 AM: a person on a bike was ejected in a crash by the Grand Central Parkway at 164 Street (NYC Open Data).
- Sep 8, late morning: a driver’s distraction was noted when a bicyclist was hurt near 164 Street (NYC Open Data).
The toll on these blocks
Since 2022 in Jamaica Hills–Briarwood, police have recorded 1,580 crashes, with 927 people injured and 3 killed (NYC Open Data). People outside cars bear it: 112 pedestrians and 32 bicyclists injured here, and one bicyclist killed (NYC Open Data).
The pain clusters at certain hours. Injuries spike in the afternoon—69 people hurt around 2 PM—and remain high into the evening (NYC Open Data). Police most often cite driver inattention, failure to yield, and disregarding signals among named factors in local crashes (NYC Open Data).
Where the street bites back
The Grand Central Parkway looms. Along that corridor, police logged 236 injuries and one death; 164 Street also shows a death among its crashes (NYC Open Data). These are not distant dots on a map. They are corners with names.
Simple fixes are on the table. Daylight corners so drivers can see people crossing. Give pedestrians a head start with signal timing. Harden left turns so drivers slow before they cut across a crosswalk. These tools meet the pattern shown here: turning drivers hitting people walking, distracted drivers missing what is in front of them (NYC Open Data).
Who is standing up to speed—and who isn’t
The worst harm starts with speed. Citywide, advocates back two moves: drop the default speed limit and force chronic speeders to slow down. New York has the bills. The Stop Super Speeders Act—filed as S 4045—would require intelligent speed limiters for repeat violators; our State Senator, Toby Stavisky, voted yes in committee on it (June 2025 vote record: S 4045).
On cameras that catch speeding near schools, Albany moved a renewal bill, S 8344. Our Assembly Member, David Weprin, voted no on that measure—opposing protections near schools, as noted in contemporaneous coverage of lawmakers who fought the program (Streetsblog NYC, S 8344). Weprin also voted yes on a bill easing bus‑lane rules for some employees (S 6815). Our Council Member, James F. Gennaro, backed a cleanup bill on abandoned cars—not a speed measure—this summer.
Do the simple things that save lives
The fixes are known, and the need is local. Slow the streets where people walk and bike. Install the concrete and timing that forces drivers to yield. And pass the tools that stop the worst repeat speeders.
One corner. One turn. One family’s before and after. If you want this to change, press your representatives and push for slower speeds and real enforcement here.
