The Wreckage Piles Up
The streets around Calvary & Mount Zion Cemeteries do not forgive. Since 2022, there have been 214 crashes here. One hundred fifty-three people have been hurt. One was seriously injured. No one on a bike or moped killed or maimed a pedestrian here. The system is tilted. The sidewalk is not safe. The crosswalk is not safe. “I have a baby with me. That would be scary. I’ll be more cautious of my surroundings,” said Samantha Hart after a bus jumped the curb in Queens, injuring seven. Another passenger remembered the moment: “I was all the way in the back and all of a sudden the bus hit the curb, I guess, jumped the curb, I went this way and that way and banged into the side of the bus” said Ken Baur.
Leadership: Progress and Delay
Local leaders have moved, but not fast enough. Senator Michael Gianaris voted yes on the Stop Super Speeders Act, a bill to force repeat speeders to install speed limiters. He also backed the extension of school speed zones. Council Member Julie Won introduced a bill to ban parking near intersections, a simple fix that saves lives. But the city still waits for a default 20 mph speed limit. The sidewalk is still a battlefield.
