A witness tried to help before medics arrived

CBS New York identified witness Corey Schwartz, who said he ran over after seeing people screaming and checked the woman’s pulse. “It's scary. My first reaction was to make sure she had a heartbeat to see if she needed CPR,” Schwartz said.

Police searched for the driver after the crash

Police said the driver left the scene. Reports agree the driver headed toward Waverly Place, but they differ on the route: the Daily News said the driver fled west on Waverly Place, while CBS and amNY said the driver continued north on Sixth Avenue and then turned west toward Waverly Place.
