Police said the driver fled after the crash

Police said the crash happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2026, at Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue in the Bronx. A driver in a BMW hit 51-year-old Angelo Camera while he was crossing Bruckner Boulevard on an e-bike or bicycle, then became involved in collisions with a Hyundai and parked vehicles, according to reports citing police.

A mechanic was riding home, relatives said

Family members told ABC7 and CBS that Angelo Camara was a mechanic riding home from work along a regular route. Several reports, including Gothamist, Daily News and News12, spelled his surname Camera, while ABC7 and CBS spelled it Camara.

Relatives and friends described him as a father and a worker known in the neighborhood. ABC7 reported that he had five children, and CBS quoted his wife, Vilmary Martinez, saying, "I want justice. I want them to find the person who did this to me. They took a good man."

Reports differ on parts of the BMW account

Gothamist, ABC7 and the Daily News described the BMW as a black 2018 BMW M550i or M550I. News12 described it as a white BMW. Accounts also differ on whether the driver was traveling north, south, or east on Bruckner Boulevard and on the order in which the driver became involved with the cyclist, the Hyundai, and parked vehicles.

Police and witnesses pointed to speed and a red light

ABC7 and the Daily News reported that police said the BMW driver was speeding and went through a red light. ABC7 also reported that witnesses told police the BMW appeared to be speeding before the initial collision. News12 quoted Camera's friend Hamlet Martinez saying, "There's consequences for speeding, and consequences for everything in life."

Police continued searching for the BMW driver

Police had not made an arrest in the immediate aftermath, according to the reports. ABC7 said investigators were working to identify and locate the driver, and authorities asked anyone with information to contact the NYPD. Relatives and friends set up candles near the crash site.
