What We Know

Police told the Daily News that Gabriel Nacato, 17, was riding a Deepower e-moto bike on Centre Street near Chambers Street on the morning of July 29, 2026, when he and a 40-year-old woman driving a 2008 black Chevy Tahoe collided while heading in the same direction. Nacato died at the scene. The driver remained there and was not immediately charged, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating. Police said the bike had a 960-watt motor and could travel up to 30 mph; the Daily News noted state and city limits on higher-powered or faster e-mobility devices.

The Daily News reported that Gabriel Nacato, 17, was riding a Deepower e-moto bike and a 40-year-old woman was driving a 2008 black Chevy Tahoe along Centre Street near Chambers Street at about 8:55 a.m. Police said they were heading in the same direction when they collided.

Nacato died at the scene. Police said the driver remained there and was not immediately charged, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating.

Witnesses described the immediate aftermath

Sonia Ariza, who was working nearby, told the Daily News she heard a hard, loud bang and saw another bicyclist trying to resuscitate the teen. She described people screaming and said the driver got out and stayed among the crowd.
