Driver charged after actor killed crossing Broadway in Midtown
A city crash record says a left-turning driver failed to yield to a 60-year-old woman crossing with the signal in Midtown; police later identified the driver as MD Abdul Shomuz and charged him in Wendy Davis’s death.

Wendy Davis, a 60-year-old Forest Hills resident who acted under the name Wenne Alton Davis, was crossing Broadway at West 53rd Street on Dec. 8, 2025, when police said MD Abdul Shomuz hit her while turning left in a Cadillac SUV. The city crash record says the pedestrian was at the intersection, crossing with the signal, and lists failure to yield right of way as the contributing factor. Davis died at Mount Sinai West. Police said Shomuz stayed at the scene and was not arrested that night; in March 2026, police said he turned himself in and was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
A left turn at Broadway and West 53rd Street
The city crash record places the fatal crash at West 53rd Street and Broadway in Manhattan at 8:54 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2025. It records one pedestrian killed and no other injuries.
Police told Gothamist that Wendy Davis was walking east to west in the south crosswalk when the driver of a Cadillac XT6 SUV made a left turn toward southbound Broadway and hit her. The official record says the pedestrian was crossing with the signal.
Wendy Davis was also known as Wenne Alton Davis
Davis, 60, lived in Forest Hills and acted under the name Wenne Alton Davis. News accounts reported credits including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Blindspot and New Amsterdam.
Police identified the driver and Cadillac SUV
Police later identified the driver as MD Abdul Shomuz of the Bronx. Gothamist reported that police said he was behind the wheel of a Cadillac SUV; earlier accounts described the vehicle as a black 2023 Cadillac XT6. The official record lists a 2023 Cadillac sport utility vehicle making a left turn.
Failure to yield is the central allegation
The official crash record lists failure to yield right of way as the contributing factor for the driver. Police also said Davis had the right of way when she was hit.
After initially reporting no arrest the night of the crash, police said in March 2026 that Shomuz turned himself in and was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian. The Manhattan district attorney’s office said he received a desk appearance ticket.
