Brooklyn Streets Run Red—Who Will Stop the Killing?

Brooklyn CB10: Jan 1, 2022 - Jun 4, 2025

The Bodies in the Road

Fourteen dead. Fifteen left with injuries so grave they will not forget. In the last three and a half years, the streets of Brooklyn CB10—Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Fort Hamilton, Dyker Beach Park—have seen 2,989 crashes. The numbers are not just numbers. They are fathers, mothers, children. A 74-year-old man, dead at the curb on Ridge Boulevard. A cyclist, thrown from his bike on the Belt Parkway. A woman, 48, ejected and killed on 68th Street. The list does not end.

In the last year alone: 4 killed, 617 injured. One child hurt every week. The old and the young, no one spared. SUVs and sedans lead the count, but trucks, bikes, and motorcycles all leave their mark.

Leadership: Words, Laws, and Waiting

The city has the power to lower the speed limit to 20 mph. Albany gave it to them with Sammy’s Law. The city has not used it. Speed cameras, proven to cut speeding and injuries, are at risk if Albany lets the law lapse. The Dangerous Vehicle Abatement Program expired. No renewal yet. Each day of delay is another day of risk.

Local leaders point to intersection redesigns and new bike lanes. But the death toll does not care about ribbon cuttings. No new law or camera brings back the dead.

The Work Left Undone

Crashes are not fate. They are the result of choices—by drivers, by lawmakers, by those who set the rules and walk away. The city can lower speeds. Albany can keep cameras on. The community can demand more.

Call your council member. Call the mayor. Demand a 20 mph limit. Demand cameras stay on. Demand streets that do not kill.

Do not wait for another name to be added to the list. Take action now.
