Bronx CB4: Night falls, the crashes keep coming

Bronx CB4: Night falls, the crashes keep coming

Bronx CB4: Jan 1, 2022 - Nov 12, 2025

Just before 10 PM on Nov 6, at E Mount Eden Ave and Monroe Ave, a driver in an SUV hit a 17‑year‑old at the intersection. He was taken from the scene, conscious but hurt, police records show (NYC Open Data).

This Week

  • Nov 5: At E 165 St and Grand Concourse, a driver disregarded a signal and hit a 53‑year‑old crossing with the light, according to police records (NYC Open Data).
  • Nov 3: On Jerome Ave at Goble Pl, a driver in a sedan struck a 19‑year‑old on a bike (NYC Open Data).
  • Oct 30: At E 165 St and Findlay Ave, a taxi driver turned left and, per police, failed to yield to a woman in the crosswalk (NYC Open Data).

The toll on these streets

Since Jan 1, 2022, Bronx Community Board 4 has recorded 5,152 crashes, injuring 2,922 people and killing 12 (NYC Open Data). People walking account for 584 injuries and 4 deaths; people on bikes for 195 injuries (NYC Open Data).

The danger clusters on known corridors. The Cross Bronx Expressway and Major Deegan have led the injury rolls. Webster Avenue and Jerome Avenue are not far behind (NYC Open Data).

Evenings are worst. Injuries peak between 4 PM and 8 PM here, then stay high into 9 PM and 10 PM (NYC Open Data). On Oct 30, police recorded failure to yield by the driver who hit a woman in the E 165 St crosswalk (NYC Open Data). On Apr 12, 2024, a speeding, unlicensed driver ran a control at E 164 St and Grand Concourse and killed a 75‑year‑old crossing with the signal (NYC Open Data, CrashID 4716652).

What changed this year

Year to date, crashes are down to 959 from 1,015 a year ago. Injuries rose to 627 from 595. Deaths fell to zero from three. Serious injuries rose to nine from five (NYC Open Data). Fewer crashes did not mean less harm for people not inside cars.

Speed still shows up in the worst cases. In this district, police marked speed in deadly pedestrian crashes in 2022 and 2024 (NYC Open Data, CrashIDs 4591971, 4716652).

Streets and buses, still carrying most of us

This borough does not move by car alone. When DOT pitched the Tremont busway just east of here, the agency said most shoppers and workers arrived on foot or transit, not by car. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson put it plain: “We need better buses to move across our borough from east to west” (Streetsblog NYC).

On our corners, simple fixes would slow the turning and the running: daylighting at crosswalks; hardened left turns; longer leading walk times; better night lighting; and targeted camera enforcement where evening injuries are highest. The records point to Grand Concourse, Jerome Avenue, and Webster Avenue. The injuries at 4–8 PM tell DOT and NYPD when to be there (NYC Open Data).

The laws Albany can pass—and who’s on the hook

Repeat speeders keep showing up in city data. The Stop Super Speeders Act would force drivers with habitual violations to install speed limiters. In the Senate, Jose Serrano, who represents this area, co‑sponsored the bill and voted yes in committee on Jun 12, 2025 (Open States). In the Assembly, Amanda Septimo co‑sponsored the companion bill A 2299, according to the record in our timeline.

Lower speeds and fewer repeat offenders would help here, where evening injuries stack up at crosswalks. The tools exist. Use them.

Take one step now. Ask city and state leaders to slow cars and rein in repeat speeders. Start here.
