Frequently Asked Questions

How were these numbers calculated?
We used NYC Open Data’s Motor Vehicle Collisions datasets: Crashes (h9gi-nx95), Persons (f55k-p6yu), and Vehicles (bm4k-52h4). We filtered for New York City incidents occurring from 2022-01-01 to 2025-11-12. Fatalities are counted from the Persons table where injury severity is recorded as Killed. Serious injuries follow the Serious Injury field. Counts for the past 12 months and year-to-date compare the same date ranges across years. Data were extracted on Nov 11, 2025. You can explore the base datasets here.
What is CrashCount?
We’re a tool for helping hold local politicians and other actors accountable for their failure to protect you when you’re walking or cycling in NYC. We update our site constantly to provide you with up to date information on what’s happening in your neighborhood.
Why highlight left turns and crosswalks?
Because several recent fatal cases in this report involve people walking in or near crosswalks as drivers turned or went straight. Those details come from police records in the city’s collision datasets cited above.
What can I do right now?
Ask city leaders to lower the default speed limit to 20 MPH and back state action to require speed limiters for repeat speeders. We maintain current steps and contacts on our action page at CrashCount Take Action.
What are the limits of this data?
The datasets rely on police reports and can be revised after publication. Some fields are marked “Unspecified” or left blank. Locations and contributing factors reflect the official record at the time of extraction.
