Drivers of sedans and SUVs account for most pedestrian carnage. In Brooklyn since 2022, drivers in sedans were linked to 3,994 pedestrian injuries, including 34 deaths; drivers in SUVs were linked to 3,931 pedestrian injuries, including 52 deaths (NYC Open Data). Trucks and buses add to the toll: truck drivers were tied to 520 pedestrian injuries, including 26 deaths (NYC Open Data).

Year to date, serious injuries are also higher than last year (198 vs. 153) and deaths are up 37.5% (77 vs. 56) (NYC Open Data). This is what a slow disaster looks like: another body on the same grid of streets, another family waiting at the hospital door.

New York City now has the legal tools to slow cars. Our city can lower speed limits under Sammy’s Law, and advocates are pressing for a default 20 MPH on local streets (CrashCount: Take Action).
