Fifteen Dead, Still No Peace: Bronx Streets Bleed, Politicians Stall

Fifteen Dead, Still No Peace: Bronx Streets Bleed, Politicians Stall

AD 87: Jan 1, 2022 - Aug 9, 2025

The Deaths Keep Coming

In Assembly District 87, the road is a wound that will not close. Fifteen people have died since 2022. Two of them were children. Thirty-three more suffered serious injuries. In the last twelve months alone, seven people died and 666 were hurt. The numbers do not heal. They only grow.

Just this February, a 75-year-old man was killed crossing Wood Avenue at White Plains Road. He had the light. The driver turned left and hit him. The man tried to wave the car off, but the car did not stop. “The accident is so terrible,” a neighbor said. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.”

A few months earlier, a 17-year-old boy and his 14-year-old passenger were thrown from a moped after a crash with a minivan. The boy died at Jacobi Hospital. His family waited for a call that never came. “When he didn’t return in the evening I tried calling him but he didn’t pick up,” his father said.

Most of the dead are pedestrians. Most of the killers are cars and SUVs.

The System Fails the Vulnerable

The city has promised safer streets. The promises are slow. The danger is fast. SUVs and cars caused eight deaths and 281 injuries. Trucks and buses killed one and injured 17. Motorcycles, mopeds, and bikes hurt more.

The city finally funded a $45 million fix for the deadly intersection at East 177th, Devoe, and Tremont. It took 17 years. In that time, at least 246 crashes, 358 injuries, and two deaths. “We are excited to make progress on this key corridor,” a city official said.

What Has Karines Reyes Done?

Assembly Member Karines Reyes has voted to extend school speed zones and co-sponsored bills to hold reckless drivers accountable. She has backed owner liability for traffic camera violations. She also voted to weaken bus rules, which puts more pedestrians and cyclists at risk.

The work is not done. The deaths have not stopped.

The Call

Every day, someone else is hit. Every week, another family mourns. Call Assembly Member Reyes. Call your council member. Demand a citywide 20 mph speed limit. Demand action against repeat speeders. Do not wait for another name to be added to the list.

See how to take action.
