Who’s Injuring and Killing Pedestrians in AD 82?

Bartow Bleeds: When Will Benedetto Choose Safety Over Silence?

Bartow Bleeds: When Will Benedetto Choose Safety Over Silence?

AD 82: Jan 1, 2022 - Jul 18, 2025

Blood on Bartow Avenue

A 71-year-old woman lay on the ground. Paramedics checked her body. She did not get up. Seven others were hurt. The crash came fast—three cars, a pole, metal and glass. “I saw one lady was out on the ground. They was giving her medical attention, checking her body. She was laid out,” said Samuel Cherry. The street was quiet again, but the loss stayed.

Just weeks before, a scooter crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway left an 18-year-old woman fighting for her life. The moped driver fled. “Police said the moped driver sped away… leaving the young woman to die on the road,” reported the Daily News. Six others went to the hospital. The road does not forgive.

In the last 12 months, five people died and 654 were injured in crashes here. Seven were left with serious injuries.

The Numbers Do Not Lie

The dead are not numbers, but the numbers are grim. Since 2022, 11 people have died and 1,928 have been injured on these streets. Cars and SUVs did most of the harm. Trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, and even bikes left their mark. Pedestrians, cyclists, children—none are spared.

Benedetto: Votes, Silence, and the Road Ahead

Assembly Member Michael Benedetto voted to extend school speed zones and expand speed cameras—steps that protect children and walkers. He also co-sponsored a bill for safer street designs (File A 1077). But he backed bills to weaken bus rules (File S 8344) and add red tape for e-scooter riders (File A 8079), shifting the burden to those already at risk. He stood up for a campaign donor seeking exemption from anti-idling laws (sought exemption), even as children and the elderly breathe the air.

The work is not done. Every day without a citywide 20 mph speed limit, another life is at risk.

Call to Action

Call Benedetto. Call your council member. Demand a 20 mph speed limit, more speed cameras, and street designs that protect the most vulnerable. The blood on the street is not an accident. It is a choice. Make them choose safety.
