Who’s Injuring and Killing Pedestrians in AD 53?

Preventable Speeding in AD 53 School Zones

(since 2022)
Morgan Avenue keeps killing. The city keeps stalling.

Morgan Avenue keeps killing. The city keeps stalling.

AD 53: Jan 1, 2022 - Aug 24, 2025

Another driver. Same ending.

  • A box truck hit a 46-year-old man on Morgan Avenue at Maspeth. He died at the scene, according to city crash data on Aug. 6, 2025. It’s the third death on Morgan in three years, as advocates warned. “I was very frustrated that nothing has been done,” Juan Ignacio Serra said. Link.
  • A dump truck making a left turn killed a pedestrian in an East Williamsburg crosswalk at Withers and Woodpoint on Mar. 1, 2025.
  • Broadway and Suydam, 3:45 a.m. A 47-year-old man was struck and dragged more than 50 feet. The driver fled. Police are still looking for information, reporters wrote on Aug. 4, 2025 and Aug. 3, 2025.

Three years. Three deaths. Same corridor. Streetsblog put it plain.

Heavy vehicles, heavy losses

  • Trucks and buses keep showing up in the worst cases. Pedestrians here were hit in 25 truck-involved crashes since 2022, with three pedestrian deaths tied to trucks, city data show. Source.
  • Morgan Avenue is a repeat hotspot, with two deaths and 37 injuries. Source.
  • Flushing Avenue and DeKalb have each seen a death. Broadway and Bushwick Avenue log dozens of injuries. Source.
  • The danger spikes at the edges of the day. Injuries pile up from 7–9 a.m., then 4–7 p.m., and again at 7–10 p.m. Source.

In this district since 2022: 12 deaths. 2,372 injuries. Forty were serious. Pedestrians alone: 5 killed, 446 hurt. City data.

“Hit and run” is the phrase that keeps coming back. A Bushwick man stood in a crosswalk at Wyckoff and Himrod and was thrown 10 to 15 feet. The driver fled. “Broken ankle, broken humorous, bunch of fractures in my skull,” he told TV. Link.

Three corners. One fix.

Name the turns. Harden them.

  • Morgan Avenue: protected bike lanes, hardened lefts, and marked mid-block crossings where people actually walk. Advocates called for it after prior deaths. “Nothing has been done,” Serra said. Link.
  • Union at Scholes: a left-turning driver killed a 72-year-old man in the intersection on Mar. 24, 2025. Put in leading walk times and daylight the corners.
  • Broadway at Suydam: fatal hit-and-run Aug. 2, 2025. Add hardened turns, crossings you can see, and truck restrictions at night.

Trucks are part of the pattern. So are turns. So is speed. “In areas… becoming residential… we’re unfortunately seeing a lot of collisions with cyclists and trucks,” Polly Trottenberg said. Link.

Officials know what works — do they?

Albany extended 24/7 school-zone speed cameras through 2030 this June, a step meant to keep pressure on the gas pedal where kids cross. Bill S8344.

The city has the tools to slow the streets, and the state has a bill to stop repeat speeders. The Stop Super Speeders Act would force drivers with heavy point totals or camera tickets to install speed limiters. Local Assembly Member Maritza Davila co-sponsors the Assembly version, A2299. Link.

Three years. Three deaths. One corridor.

Lower speeds. Harden turns. Fix Morgan Avenue.

Act now. Take action.

Davila Supports Safety Boosting State Participation in BQE Planning

Feb 10 - Eighteen Brooklyn officials demand state DOT address BQE’s full deadly stretch. They reject piecemeal fixes. They call out decades of harm. The state’s refusal leaves neighborhoods exposed. The city’s hands are tied. The highway’s danger remains. Vulnerable lives hang in the balance.

On February 10, 2023, eighteen Brooklyn lawmakers issued a joint letter demanding New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) participate in comprehensive planning for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE). The statement, prompted by a Streetsblog report, reads: "We ask that the NYS DOT remember the daily harms caused by the BQE in its current state—not just the crumbling cantilever section—and join us at the table in search of a solution." The group includes Reps. Nydia Velázquez, Dan Goldman, Borough President Antonio Reynoso, state Sens. Jabari Brisport, Julia Salazar, Kristen Gonzalez, Andrew Gounardes, Assembly Members Bobby Carroll, Maritza Davila, Phara Souffrant Forrest, Emily Gallagher, Jo Anne Simon, Marcela Mitaynes, and Council Members Alexa Avilés, Shahana Hanif, Crystal Hudson, Jennifer Gutiérrez, and Lincoln Restler. Senator Gounardes called the state’s refusal to join the city’s visioning process “unacceptable and irresponsible.” The lawmakers stress that the BQE’s harms—crashes, pollution, division—stretch from Bay Ridge to Greenpoint. Without state action, only city-owned segments see attention. The city’s efforts are limited. The state’s inaction leaves systemic danger unaddressed.
