Who’s Injuring and Killing Pedestrians in AD 30?

No More Neighbors Lost: Demand Safe Streets Now

AD 30: Jan 1, 2022 - Jul 16, 2025

The Toll: Lives Lost, Bodies Broken

In Assembly District 30, the violence comes slow and steady. Fifteen people are dead. Eighteen hundred are hurt. Twenty-three are left with wounds that will not heal—serious injuries that change a life forever. These are not numbers. They are neighbors, children, elders. They are the man who never made it home from work. The woman who crossed the street and did not reach the other side.

In the last year alone, 536 people were injured in 890 crashes. Six were hurt so badly they may never walk the same. Four families buried loved ones. The dead do not get a second chance. The living carry scars.

Who Bears the Brunt

Pedestrians and cyclists pay the highest price. Cars and trucks killed five. Motorcycles and mopeds killed one. Bikes killed one. SUVs and sedans did the most harm—314 injuries and deaths—but trucks, buses, and bikes all left their mark. The street does not forgive.

What Has Been Done—And What Has Not

Assembly Member Steven Raga has taken some steps. He voted to extend school speed zones and expand speed cameras, moves that protect children and slow the worst drivers. He co-sponsored bills to force repeat speeders to install devices that keep them from breaking the law (File A 7979). He pushed for automated cameras to catch double-parkers who block crosswalks and bike lanes (New push for automated ticketing of drivers who double park in NYC). But he also voted to weaken bus rules, making it easier for drivers to endanger people outside the car (File S 8344).

The city made half its taxis wheelchair accessible. “We made that today. It is the most accessible fleet in the entire country,” said TLC Commissioner David Do. Progress, but not enough. The bodies keep coming.

What You Must Do

This is not fate. This is policy. Call Assembly Member Raga. Call your council member. Demand a citywide 20 mph speed limit. Demand real enforcement against the drivers who kill and maim. Join Families for Safe Streets. Join Transportation Alternatives. Do not wait for another name on the list.
